A remarkable act of heroism took center stage at the Chandler Unified District Governing Board meeting on February 12, 2025, as Cadet Ethan Van Briesen was honored with the Air Force Junior ROTC Silver Valor Award. The 15-year-old's quick thinking and decisive actions during a life-threatening emergency potentially saved his stepfather's life.
On July 27, 2024, Ethan's stepfather suffered a severe leg injury while playing with family. As blood poured from the wound, Ethan's mother struggled to apply pressure. Hearing the commotion, Ethan rushed in, assessed the situation, and fashioned a tourniquet from a belt, effectively controlling the blood loss until emergency responders arrived. First responders credited Ethan's swift actions with preventing further injury and possibly saving his stepfather's life.
The presentation highlighted not only Ethan's bravery but also the importance of life-saving skills taught within the Air Force Junior ROTC program. His actions serve as a powerful reminder of the impact that preparedness and courage can have in critical moments.
Following this inspiring recognition, the meeting transitioned to a presentation celebrating Black History Month, showcasing the talents and contributions of Chandler Unified School District students. The evening underscored the district's commitment to fostering both academic excellence and character development among its students.
