Burbank Parks Board honors AJ Lopez and unveils centennial celebration plans

The Burbank Parks and Recreation Board meeting on February 13, 2025, opened with a heartfelt tribute to Anthony "AJ" Lopez, a 17-year-old who passed away in December 2024. AJ, who battled Duchenne muscular dystrophy and acute congestive heart failure, was remembered for his courage, humor, and passion for power soccer. The board expressed condolences to his family, honoring his legacy of joy and resilience.

Following the tribute, Virginia Kaustankin, a program specialist, announced the launch of the centennial celebration for Burbank Parks and Recreation. The festivities include "I Spy Burbank," a year-long adventure encouraging community exploration of local parks through interactive challenges. This month’s focus is on McCambridge Park, where participants can engage with its history and amenities.

Kaustankin also highlighted upcoming events, including the Burbank Adaptive Sports Expo on February 15, showcasing adaptive sports and promoting inclusivity. Additionally, the Betsy Lukey Creative Arts Centre is hosting an exhibition titled "Ancient Arts in a Modern World," featuring various artistic talents until February 27.

In a significant update, Parks and Recreation Director Marissa Garcia reported on the damage to the Starlight Bowl from a January windstorm. Due to extensive repairs needed, including a roof replacement, the venue will not host concerts this summer. Instead, the city plans to organize concerts in local parks, including a drone show for the Fourth of July celebration, aiming to provide accessible entertainment for the community.

The meeting concluded with public comments, including support for the Burbank Community Band and its upcoming 85th-anniversary concert, "The Sound of Burbank," scheduled for April 12. The board remains committed to fostering community engagement and celebrating Burbank's rich history through its parks and recreation initiatives.
