Oklahoma Broadband Office details $1B expansion for high-speed Internet access

The Oklahoma Broadband Office presented a comprehensive update on its initiatives during the Appropriations and Budget Finance Subcommittee meeting held on February 13, 2025. Director Sanders highlighted the significant progress made in expanding high-speed internet access across rural Oklahoma, emphasizing the state's commitment to bridging the digital divide.

In 2024, the Oklahoma Broadband Office awarded over $500 million in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the Capital Projects Fund. This funding is aimed at ensuring that more than 180 projects are initiated to enhance internet connectivity in underserved areas. Director Sanders noted that Oklahoma has been recognized nationally for its efforts, ranking fourth in the country for reducing the number of homes and businesses lacking high-speed internet access.

The meeting underscored the importance of these initiatives for economic development, healthcare access, and educational opportunities in rural communities. Sanders assured committee members that all grant agreements have been executed, and construction is already underway. He also emphasized the rigorous compliance measures in place to safeguard federal funds and prevent misuse.

The Oklahoma Broadband Office is currently in a Request for Information (RFI) phase, allowing internet service providers to provide feedback on proposed project areas. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that high-speed internet reaches every unserved and underserved location in the state.

Additionally, the office is directing remaining ARPA funds towards a "middle mile" program, which will enhance the infrastructure necessary for broader internet access. This initiative is expected to further increase connectivity for homes and businesses throughout Oklahoma.
