Simi Valley honors volunteer service and proclaims February as Black History Month

The City Council of Simi Valley convened on February 11, 2025, to address several key community matters, including the recognition of local volunteers and the proclamation of Black History Month.

The meeting began with a roll call and a motion to waive the reading of resolutions and ordinances, which passed unanimously. The first significant agenda item was the presentation of certificates of appreciation to outgoing members of the Special Events Support Review Committee. These volunteers reviewed 12 applications for special event funding, totaling $83,425, and recommended $25,000 in grants. The committee members were acknowledged for their dedication to the community.

Next, the council honored Dorothy Janick with the 2024 Wayne Templeton Volunteer of the Year Award. Janick has volunteered nearly 1,400 hours over the past three years, significantly contributing to the well-being of seniors in Simi Valley. Her efforts include meal preparation and organizing community events, showcasing her commitment to enhancing the lives of local seniors.

The council also recognized four outgoing members of the Council on Aging Executive Board for their contributions over the past years. Their leadership and dedication to senior services were highlighted, emphasizing the impact of their work on the community.

In a significant cultural acknowledgment, the council proclaimed February as Black History Month. The proclamation emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of Black Americans throughout history and this year's theme, "African Americans and Labor." The council encouraged residents to reflect on the sacrifices made by generations of African Americans and to continue advocating for equality.
