Lewis Central School District adds new courses to enhance educational offerings

The Lewis Central Community School District is set to enhance educational opportunities for students with the introduction of several new courses for the upcoming academic year. During the school board meeting on December 16, 2024, board members discussed the addition of 20 new classes aimed at expanding the curriculum across various subjects, including math, performing arts, science, and social studies.

Among the notable additions is a technical math course in partnership with Iowa Western Community College, which will allow students to earn college credits directly on campus. This course is essential for students participating in the district's well bank program, enabling them to obtain valuable certifications. Additionally, the performing arts department will introduce an advanced instrumental techniques class and a film studies course, providing students with opportunities to refine their skills for auditions and explore filmmaking.

In the science department, students will now have access to Iowa Western's general biology courses, marking the first time college credit will be available in this area. The curriculum will also include a new course titled "Kingdoms of Life," which will replace zoology and cover all five kingdoms of living organisms.

The social studies curriculum will see the introduction of Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History and AP Human Geography, alongside a new criminal justice course. These additions aim to provide students with diverse learning pathways and prepare them for future academic pursuits.

Another significant initiative discussed was the introduction of peer-to-peer mentoring courses designed to support students with disabilities. This program will equip students with the skills necessary to foster an inclusive school environment, emphasizing understanding and support for their peers.

The meeting also highlighted the success of the district's welding program, which has seen increased enrollment and positive student engagement. The board expressed enthusiasm for the new course offerings and their potential to enhance student learning experiences.
