Students propose robotic solutions to combat ocean acidification and invasive species

The Pleasant Valley Community School District held a School Board Meeting on December 16, 2024, where students presented their innovative projects focused on ocean-related issues. The meeting highlighted the students' research and solutions addressing significant environmental challenges, particularly ocean acidification and invasive species.

The students, part of a robotics team, explained their project centered around the theme of the ocean. They discussed how they identified ocean acidification as a critical problem, attributing it to increased carbon dioxide emissions from industrial activities over the past 200 years. This rise in acidity poses threats to marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs and various marine life.

To combat ocean acidification, the team proposed a solution involving the extraction of calcium carbonate from the ocean floor. They detailed a plan to deploy a solar-powered drill that would grind up calcite, a form of calcium carbonate, and then distribute it back into the ocean using a vacuum system. This method aims to neutralize the harmful carbonic acid affecting ocean pH levels.

In addition to addressing acidification, the students also tackled the issue of invasive species. They proposed the development of a robotic submarine designed to locate and capture invasive species, as well as a robotic fish intended to deter these species from disrupting local ecosystems.

Throughout their presentation, the students emphasized the importance of teamwork and the engineering design process they learned through their involvement in robotics. They consulted experts to refine their ideas, demonstrating a commitment to scientific inquiry and practical problem-solving.

The meeting concluded with a recognition of the students' hard work and creativity, showcasing their potential to contribute positively to environmental conservation efforts. The School Board expressed support for continued student engagement in STEM projects, highlighting the importance of fostering innovation and critical thinking in young learners.
