Cherokee High School project progresses as school board considers new resolution

The Cherokee County Board of Education held a work session on February 13, 2025, focusing on several key topics, including updates on capital projects and proposed policy changes.

Mr. Morris presented the February capital outlay report, highlighting significant progress on the new Cherokee High School. Inspections above the ceiling are ongoing, and the exterior walls of both field houses are complete. Footings for the baseball fields are also finished, indicating that the athletic facilities are advancing well. Landscaping activities have begun, with preparations for hardscaping and planters underway.

The report also covered the Free Home Elementary replacement project, which is nearing completion at 99%. The final punch list and closeout documents are pending, with fixtures, furniture, and equipment scheduled for installation in the spring. The new facility is set to open in August 2025, with milestone activities planned for the transition from the existing school.

Additionally, Mr. Morris mentioned that improvements to Teasley Middle School Drive will be presented to the board for consideration in March.

The meeting also addressed an action item regarding a resolution to opt out of the statewide floating homestead exemption. This resolution, if adopted, would allow the school board to access local funding from homestead assessments, which is crucial for maintaining educational quality.
