The Waco City Council made significant strides in urban development during its recent Business Session on February 18, 2025, approving a key alleyway abandonment that promises to enhance downtown improvements.
The council unanimously voted to abandon a 0.0256-acre tract of land, specifically a portion of the 15-foot wide alley in Block 10 of the Paul Quinn addition. This decision, supported by the Waco Plan Commission, was based on findings that the alleyway was not essential for public use, traffic flow, or emergency vehicle access. Additionally, the abandonment will not adversely affect utility access for surrounding properties.
City Manager Wagstaff highlighted that the move aligns with ongoing efforts to improve the area around the courthouse, which is expected to foster further development in downtown Waco. The council's approval included a condition to retain easements for any utility lines within the abandoned area, ensuring that infrastructure needs are met without disruption.
With no public comments during the hearing, the council swiftly moved to approve the measure, reflecting a strong consensus on the importance of this urban planning initiative. The decision marks a step forward in Waco's commitment to revitalizing its downtown area and enhancing community infrastructure.
