The City of Waco held a work session on February 18, 2025, to discuss the development of a new Welcome Center, which aims to enhance the city’s tourism infrastructure. The meeting focused on preliminary design renderings and the project’s budget, which is funded through hotel occupancy tax revenue.
During the session, city officials presented updated designs that prioritize functionality, accessibility, and visitor engagement. The proposed Welcome Center will feature an outdoor lounge area, retail space for local merchandise, and a hospitality room designed for community events and displays of local art. The design process has involved collaboration between city staff and experienced architects to ensure the center reflects Waco's unique character.

City officials highlighted the importance of using hotel occupancy tax funds for this project, as it aligns with state law and supports local businesses and tourism growth.
Three alternate design features were proposed to provide flexibility in the final budget: wood wall paneling for aesthetic appeal, a glass wall for modern separation of spaces, and a professional art display system. These options will allow the city to refine costs while maintaining essential components of the Welcome Center.
Next steps include finalizing bids and returning to the city council in April for contract approval. Construction is expected to begin in May, with a projected completion date in October, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new facility. City officials expressed enthusiasm for the project and welcomed feedback from council members to ensure the design meets community needs.
