Chickasaw County advocates enhance support for sexual assault survivors with local partnerships

Chickasaw County officials highlighted the urgent need for support services for survivors of sexual assault during the Board of Supervisors meeting on December 16, 2024. With nearly 2,000 women and approximately 900 men in the county estimated to have experienced sexual assault in their lifetimes, the call for enhanced resources and community awareness was clear.

A representative from a local advocacy group emphasized the importance of providing free and confidential services to survivors, regardless of when the assault occurred. "We are here to help provide services when people report, if they report, to law enforcement and to us," she stated, underscoring the organization's commitment to supporting individuals from ages 4 to 94 in their healing journeys.

The representative noted that while they have served five survivors in the past year, the actual number of individuals needing assistance is likely much higher. She expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts with local law enforcement and the county attorney's office, which are crucial for creating a supportive environment for survivors. "Our goal is to empower more people to report so they can start their healing journey," she added.

The discussion also touched on the challenges faced in rural communities, where stigma and fear of disclosure often prevent individuals from seeking help. The representative urged continued support for funding these essential services, emphasizing their role in reducing stigma and fostering a culture of healing within the community.

In addition to the focus on sexual assault services, the meeting included administrative discussions, such as the appointment of Jeremy McGrath to the Board of Health for a three-year term, which was unanimously approved by the board members.

The meeting underscored the critical need for ongoing support and resources for survivors, aiming to strengthen community ties and enhance the safety and well-being of all residents in Chickasaw County.
