Bay Oaks gym renovation targets April completion and expanded programming for youth activities

The Town Council of Fort Myers Beach convened on February 19, 2025, to discuss the ongoing developments at Bay Oaks Recreation Center and the community's after-school programs. The meeting highlighted the progress being made in the renovation of Bay Oaks, which is expected to reopen by April 2025, following extensive repairs and upgrades.

Currently, the after-school program is thriving, with 42 children registered and an average daily attendance of around 30. This program is temporarily housed at the local library due to the ongoing renovations at Bay Oaks. The library is set to reopen on March 10, 2025, and the council anticipates that the after-school program will continue to utilize the upper floors of the library even after its reopening.

The renovation of Bay Oaks includes significant improvements to the gym flooring, which will now feature epoxy surfaces instead of tile to mitigate future water damage. The council discussed the design of the gym floor, which will incorporate lines for basketball, pickleball, and volleyball, ensuring that the facility meets the diverse needs of the community. The flooring contractor is expected to present design options soon, and the council is optimistic about the timeline for completion.

In addition to the gym renovations, the council addressed the need for additional pickleball courts due to high demand. Currently, the existing courts are often overcrowded, with reports of up to 35 players at a time. The council is exploring options to expedite the construction of new courts and improve access to restroom facilities for players, as the current bathrooms are not consistently open during peak hours.

The meeting also touched on the importance of communication regarding the status of Bay Oaks. Council members emphasized the need to promote the ongoing programs at Bay Oaks, despite its official closure for renovations, to improve community perception and participation.

As the council moves forward, they are focused on ensuring that the renovations are completed efficiently and that the community's recreational needs are met.
