Town Council approves plans for Norfolk Fitness Wellness Center near Newport Avenue

The Norfolk Planning Commission convened on January 23, 2025, to discuss several key agenda items, including the proposed Enhanced Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center. The meeting began with a presentation detailing the facility's design and location, situated at the intersection of Newport Avenue and North Shore Road.

The proposed two-story center will feature a T-shaped layout, with the main entrance and lobby positioned on the north side, facing North Shore Road. A drop-off area and entrance canopy will enhance accessibility. The facility's west side will showcase a natatorium and gymnasium, while the south side will provide access to the adjacent wetlands and a nature explorium.

The building's exterior will be clad in a combination of brick veneer and metal panels, complemented by a horizontal wood grain finish. The design includes metal canopies and coping, with windows featuring an aluminum storefront system. The presentation also included proposed site signage, highlighting a prominent monument sign at the Newport Avenue entrance, measuring 3 feet tall and 12 feet long. Additional smaller entry signs will be located near North Shore Road.

The Architectural Review Board (ARB) recommended approval of the project, with a unanimous vote of 8 to 0. Following the presentation, the commission opened the floor for discussion and questions regarding the consent agenda, which included various assembly items.
