Mountain America Credit Union unveils new branch plans at former Zaxby's site

Sandy City’s Planning Commission has approved the site plan for a new Mountain America Credit Union branch, set to replace the long-closed Zaxby’s restaurant at 9446 South Highland Drive. The decision, made during the commission's meeting on February 20, 2025, marks a significant step in revitalizing the area and enhancing local banking services.

The proposed design features a modern architectural style, incorporating a single slope pitch roof and a combination of smooth stone and fiber cement lap siding in neutral tones. The new branch will also include a remote drive-through to streamline traffic flow and prioritize pedestrian safety, addressing concerns about cross-traffic in the busy shopping center.

Brooke Bean, representing Sanders Associate Architects, and Amber Lavin from Mountain America Credit Union expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to serve the community better. The planning commission noted that the new design aligns with the evolving architectural standards of the shopping center, which has seen various deviations from its original theme over the years.

The commission's approval included a special exception to allow this architectural variation, reflecting a broader trend of modernization within the area.
