Grass Valley Commission proposes historic walking tour and Golden Pasty landmark

The Grass Valley Historical Commission is making strides to enhance the city’s cultural heritage, with a focus on a new historic walking tour program. During a recent meeting, the commission discussed several initiatives aimed at celebrating local history and engaging the community.

One of the standout proposals is the introduction of a bronze plaque commemorating the Walsh Mill and the Main Street Firehouse. This initiative, led by Commissioner Poston and supported by fellow commission members, aims to provide a tangible connection to Grass Valley's past. Once approved by the Nevada County Landmarks Commission, the plaque will be placed in a prominent location, allowing residents and visitors to appreciate the city's rich history.

Additionally, the commission is working on historical display signage for two cemeteries within city limits. These signs will honor the early Jewish and Catholic pioneers buried in the 1853 Catholic Cemetery and the 1856 Jewish Cemetery. The commission hopes to gain city council support for this educational project, which aims to inform the public about the significant figures who shaped the community.

In a move to recognize local contributions, the commission is also advocating for the Grass Valley Star Award, which will honor influential citizens Howard and Peggy Levine. The commission is gathering support letters and preparing a nomination overview to present to the city council.

The highlight of the meeting was the proposal for a historic walking tour that will incorporate murals, homes, and businesses, creating a comprehensive experience for participants. A key feature of this tour will be the "Golden Pasty," a bronze sculpture that celebrates the town's unique culinary heritage. This centerpiece aims to attract visitors to Mill Street, encouraging them to learn about Grass Valley's history while supporting local businesses.

The commission is eager to receive direction from the city council on these initiatives, which promise to enrich the community's historical narrative and foster a deeper connection among residents and visitors alike.
