The Sparks Planning Commission meeting on February 20, 2025, focused on a proposed expansion of a fuel distribution facility operated by Airgas. The key discussion centered around replacing an existing 3,000-gallon liquid nitrogen tank with a larger 9,000-gallon tank at the site located at 1671 Glendale Avenue.
The proposed expansion aims to enhance operational efficiency by reducing the frequency of refueling trips required for the liquid nitrogen tank. This change necessitates an amendment to the existing special use permit, originally approved in 2010, which also allowed for gas dispensing and retail operations at the facility.

Subscribe for Free Development Services Manager Scott Gary addressed concerns regarding the safety of the gases stored on-site. He confirmed that the bulk gases, including nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, are not classified as hazardous under the International Fire Code (IFC) and Nevada Hazardous Material Laws. The facility's liquid nitrogen, classified as an inert gas, is well below the hazardous threshold, with the proposed tank's capacity converting to approximately 1,200 cubic feet, significantly under the 6,000 cubic feet limit.
Gary also noted that the facility maintains a strong working relationship with the Sparks Fire Department, which conducts annual inspections as part of its target hazard facility program. The commission's discussions highlighted the importance of safety and operational improvements in the region's gas distribution services.
