In a vibrant gathering at the East Baton Rouge School Board Special Meeting on February 20, 2025, the spotlight shone brightly on two exceptional students from Baton Rouge Magnet High School, Anthony Burton and Sydney Wheeler. Their remarkable achievements in the Young Arts competition, a prestigious national program that recognizes outstanding young artists, were celebrated with heartfelt recognition.
Glenn Sherman, the school system's music specialist, introduced the students, highlighting their selection from a pool of 11,000 competitors nationwide. Anthony, a senior, earned accolades in the singer-songwriter category, while Sydney distinguished herself in the popular voice category, being one of only 75 winners. Their success not only reflects their talent but also the dedication of their teachers, including Dr. Kimberly Costanza and Miss Emily Dafoe, who have nurtured their artistic abilities.

Meanwhile, Anthony, who was unable to attend due to rehearsals for the musical "Little Shop of Horrors," received a scholarship and valuable connections through the program.
The meeting also recognized Elm Grove Baptist Church as a vital community partner for Capitol Elementary School. Their volunteers have dedicated countless hours to support students' academic growth, providing tutoring and organizing events that foster a sense of community. Assistant Principal Miss Broadway praised their commitment, noting the profound impact they have on students' lives.
