A groundbreaking $10 million retention program aimed at supporting future educators is set to launch this semester, with five institutions already on board. The initiative, which includes an initial stipend phase for the 2023-2024 academic year, is designed to bolster the teaching workforce by providing financial assistance to students enrolled in experiential learning courses related to education.
During a recent Maryland Legislature meeting, officials discussed the program's structure, emphasizing that it targets institutions with at least 40% Pell-eligible students. The program will not only support those pursuing teaching degrees but also any student engaged in relevant experiential learning, broadening access to financial aid.
The first phase of stipends will run through the 2025-2026 academic year, followed by a second phase focused on internships from 2026 to 2029. This dual approach aims to enhance both retention and practical experience for aspiring teachers.
In addition to the retention program, an increase of $18 million for teacher fellows was also highlighted. This funding will facilitate further outreach to students, encouraging applications and participation in the program through collaboration with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and local counties.
As institutions prepare to submit student lists for stipend distribution, the program is poised to make a significant impact on the future of education in Maryland, addressing both financial barriers and the need for qualified teachers in the classroom.
