A significant proposal for a new school building took center stage at the Zoning Commission's public hearing on February 24, 2025. Cedar Tree Academy, an early childhood public charter school, aims to expand its facilities to better serve its growing student population, which currently stands at 399, with plans to accommodate up to 600 students.
Latonya Henderson, CEO of Cedar Tree Academy, highlighted the school's mission to provide a safe learning environment for at-risk students in Ward 8. The proposed new building will replace the existing structure and include essential facilities such as a gym, library, cafeteria, and dedicated spaces for STEM, arts, and music programs. Henderson emphasized the need for this expansion to address the achievement gap and enhance educational opportunities for low-income families.

Subscribe for Free Architect Lou Boza presented the design plans, detailing the new school's layout and features. The proposed site, located at 701 Howard Road, will include a playground, parking areas, and a drop-off zone for students. The design aims to blend with the surrounding Bridal District neighborhood while providing a welcoming and functional space for both students and the community.
The commission accepted Boza and traffic engineer Nicole White as expert witnesses, with no objections raised regarding their qualifications. The project is positioned to not only enhance educational resources but also to foster community engagement through its design and facilities.
As Cedar Tree Academy moves forward with its plans, the anticipated outcomes include improved educational facilities for local children and a strengthened commitment to serving the community's needs. The next steps will involve further discussions and approvals as the project progresses.
