James City County honors Janet Green with chairman's award for exceptional community service

During the Board of Supervisors Regular Meeting on December 10, 2024, the spotlight was on Janet B. Green, who received the Chairman's Award for her outstanding contributions to the community through her work with Habitat for the Peninsula in Greater Williamsburg. This recognition highlights her two-decade commitment to providing affordable housing solutions in James City County.

Janet Green began her tenure as CEO of Habitat for the Peninsula in February 2002. Under her leadership, the organization has transformed the housing landscape, particularly through innovative projects and partnerships. Notably, she played a pivotal role in the introduction of the "neighborhood blitz" initiative, which has successfully assisted numerous families in need of housing. The first blitz took place in 2019 in the Forest Glen subdivision, helping 16 families, followed by another in 2023 in the James Terrace neighborhood, aiding an additional eight families.

One of Green's most remarkable achievements was overseeing the construction of the world's first owner-occupied 3D-printed house in James City County, showcasing her willingness to embrace new ideas and technologies in the pursuit of affordable housing. Throughout her career, she has been instrumental in building 174 homes on the Peninsula, with 60 of those located in James City County, contributing significantly to the local economy with a total assessed value exceeding $14.3 million.

As she prepares to retire, Green leaves behind a legacy of innovation and dedication, including 19 new lots available for future affordable housing projects. The Board of Supervisors expressed their gratitude for her service, emphasizing the lasting impact of her work on the community.
