The Henry County Board of Supervisors celebrated a significant milestone at their October 22 meeting, proclaiming November 2024 as Disability Rights and Resource Center Awareness Month. This proclamation marks the 10-year anniversary of the Disability Rights and Resource Center, which has been a vital advocate for individuals with disabilities in the West Piedmont Planning District.
Dr. Cobble presented the proclamation, highlighting the importance of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its role in ensuring civil rights and access for people with disabilities. The proclamation emphasizes the center's commitment to inclusion and diversity, which fosters community growth and economic strength.
Carol Tooning, the executive director of the Disability Rights and Resource Center, expressed gratitude for the board's recognition and shared insights into the center's mission. She noted that the organization is consumer-driven, with over half of its board and staff comprising individuals with disabilities. The center provides essential services, including advocacy, peer support, and independent living skills, assisting hundreds of individuals each year.
In her remarks, Tooning highlighted the center's achievements, including support for 286 individuals in the past year alone, with a focus on helping older adults remain in their homes through modifications and support services. She also mentioned the center's role in facilitating transitions for students moving from school to employment or higher education.
The board unanimously approved the proclamation, reinforcing the community's commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities. The meeting underscored the ongoing efforts to promote accessibility and inclusion in Henry County, setting a positive tone for future initiatives.
