Georgetown Cemetery expansion proposal moves forward for 2800 new burial plots

Fauquier County's Planning Commission made significant strides during its November 21, 2024, meeting, focusing on land use and community development. A key decision involved the approval of a special permit for the expansion of the Little Georgetown Cemetery, which will add 9.4 acres and approximately 2,800 burial plots to the existing site. This expansion is crucial as the cemetery is projected to reach capacity within the next three to five years. The new area will feature a paved arrival court, service vehicle parking, and a scattering garden, enhancing accessibility and services for the community.

The cemetery, located in a historically significant area, is part of the Broad Run Little Georgetown Rural Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The expansion plan includes careful consideration of environmental impacts, with measures in place to minimize disruption to existing wetlands and to ensure compliance with zoning regulations.

In addition to the cemetery expansion, the Commission discussed a proposed 14-megawatt solar facility on Remington Road. This project aims to utilize over 161 acres of land, primarily wooded, and will connect to Dominion's distribution system. The facility is designed to align with the county's goals of preserving rural character while promoting renewable energy. The project will include extensive landscaping and setbacks to mitigate visual impacts and ensure environmental protection.
