In a recent government meeting held on June 10, 2023, significant discussions centered around the appointment of Alejandro Salgado as the new administrator of public housing. A key focus was the administration's ongoing efforts to address gender-based violence through housing initiatives.
Salgado highlighted that combating gender-based violence is a top priority for his administration. Since taking office, one of the first initiatives was to amend the Section 8 administrative plan to provide housing vouchers specifically for victims of domestic violence. This initiative has already resulted in the distribution of 20 housing vouchers and the allocation of 80 public housing units, assisting approximately 100 victims this year alone. Furthermore, starting July 1, the administration will receive an additional 218 Section 8 vouchers aimed at supporting these vulnerable individuals.
In addition to providing housing options, Salgado emphasized the importance of training and orientation workshops for staff to better handle cases of gender-based violence. This proactive approach aims to create a supportive environment for victims seeking assistance.
The meeting also addressed the administration's recent acquisition of a residential property in Ponce for elderly residents, purchased for $6.1 million. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to increase housing availability for the growing elderly population in Puerto Rico. Salgado noted that the administration is in the process of acquiring another property in Toa Alta, further expanding housing options for seniors.
As the meeting concluded, it was clear that the administration of public housing is committed to addressing pressing community needs, particularly for victims of violence and the elderly. These initiatives not only aim to provide immediate relief but also contribute to the long-term goal of enhancing housing accessibility across the region.
