Chaparral Unified hosts Pumas 101 and annual CHS showcase for future students

During the recent Desert Sands Unified School District Governing Board meeting, a series of engaging events and initiatives at Chaparral High School were highlighted, showcasing the school’s commitment to fostering student involvement and community spirit.

One of the key discussions centered around the successful Pumas 101 day held on February 11, where eighth graders were introduced to the high school environment. Led by student leaders from ASB, ROTC, and peer mentoring programs, the event provided a comprehensive tour of the school, emphasizing the diverse sports, clubs, and elective opportunities available to incoming students. This initiative aims to ease the transition for middle schoolers and encourage their participation in high school activities.

Following this, the annual CHS showcase took place on February 12, themed around Candyland. This event allowed various departments to present the opportunities awaiting students in the upcoming school year. Families were invited to vote for their favorite department, with the performing arts emerging as the winner. Notably, the showcase also featured a booth for the newly introduced girls flag football program, which has already garnered interest from over 100 girls, signaling strong community support for this CIF scholarship sport set to launch in the fall.

Additionally, the school hosted a unique event called "Dancing with the Boomers," inspired by the popular television show "Dancing with the Stars." This event paired members of the varsity dance team with other varsity athletes, fostering camaraderie and school spirit through dance.

The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude from trustees, who emphasized the importance of student feedback and community engagement. The positive developments at Chaparral High School reflect a broader commitment within the Desert Sands Unified School District to enhance student experiences and strengthen community ties.
