Broomfield restructures July 4th picnic to enhance family-friendly atmosphere

Broomfield County is taking significant steps to enhance safety and family-friendliness at its upcoming July 4th Great American Picnic. During a recent City Council session, officials discussed a comprehensive plan to restructure the event, addressing concerns about unruly behavior that has marred past celebrations.

Director of Operations, Mr. Shuck, outlined a draft plan that includes a fenced area on the east side of the event venue, where alcohol will be restricted to a designated beer tent. This change aims to create a more controlled environment for families, reducing the potential for disturbances caused by attendees who have been drinking throughout the day. The plan also includes bag checks at entry points, managed by hired security personnel, to ensure a safe atmosphere.

The decision to maintain the event at its current location, The Commons, was made after logistical challenges were identified in relocating the fireworks display. The council emphasized the importance of fireworks as a central feature of the celebration, which has drawn large crowds in the past.

Council members expressed support for the new measures, highlighting the need for better communication with the community about the changes. They acknowledged that previous years had seen an influx of non-residents, leading to safety concerns.
