Vermont's youth are set to gain valuable skills and contribute to local conservation efforts thanks to the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC), which recently outlined its initiatives during a House Agriculture meeting. The organization is expanding its programs to provide paid service experiences for young adults aged 15 to 26, with an emphasis on workforce development and environmental stewardship.
Rick Knopf, the executive director of VYCC, highlighted the organization's dual focus on conservation and youth training. This year, VYCC expects to engage around 80 paid service members, offering them opportunities to earn academic credits and certifications through partnerships with local educational institutions. Notably, high school students can now gain higher education credit through their involvement in VYCC programs, enhancing their educational pathways.

The program now boasts 36 crew weeks, up from just six four years ago, focusing on projects that benefit Vermont's natural habitats. These projects include timber stand improvement and invasive species management, addressing ecological needs that larger logging operations often overlook.
In addition to conservation work, VYCC is also addressing food insecurity through its farm program. By partnering with regional medical centers, the organization delivers fresh produce to families in need, providing over 70,000 pounds of food to more than 480 recipients this year alone. This initiative not only supports local agriculture but also fosters a new generation of agricultural leaders.
The meeting underscored the importance of these programs in both workforce development and community support. As VYCC continues to expand its reach and impact, it stands as a vital resource for Vermont's youth and the environment, demonstrating a commitment to building a sustainable future for the state.
