During the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors regular meeting on November 7, 2024, significant discussions centered around a major expansion project in the local mining sector, which is projected to cost approximately $500 million. This expansion aims to enhance coal processing capabilities and alleviate current bottlenecks in the mining operations.
The meeting highlighted plans for a new Raquel storage facility that will increase coal storage capacity from 8,000 to 150,000 raw tons. This facility will allow for a more efficient separation of mining and processing operations, enabling continuous operation of the mine while the preparation plant processes coal independently. Additionally, the construction of a new preparation plant is set to double processing capacity from 1,300 to 2,000 raw tons per hour, further supporting increased production.
Ventilation improvements were also discussed, with the installation of new ventilation shafts to accommodate expanded mining operations into Tazewell County. The meeting noted that the expansion would create approximately 50 to 60 new jobs, with a significant portion of these positions expected to be filled by residents of Tazewell County.
In addition to the mining updates, the Board approved a resolution to honor the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for their century of service in Tazewell County. This resolution is set to be presented at a ceremony on November 23.
The meeting concluded with plans for further updates on the mining expansion and a commitment to keep the community informed about ongoing developments. The Board expressed optimism about the future of the mining industry in the region, contingent on stable coal prices and continued investment in local infrastructure.
