Washington County approves disaster relief MOU with United Way for $519414 allocation

The Washington County Board of Supervisors held a regular meeting on December 10, 2024, where they discussed a significant memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the United Way of Southwest Virginia. This agreement focuses on disaster recovery relief funding aimed at assisting residents affected by recent disasters in the area.

During the meeting, Mr. Berry presented the MOU, highlighting its purpose to allocate $519,414.21 specifically for disaster recovery efforts. This funding will be directed to Mr. Tony Miller, the volunteer coordinator responsible for overseeing rebuilding efforts scheduled to commence in January. The board emphasized that the funds would be used strictly for disaster recovery, as outlined in the MOU.

Mr. Snodgrass, who reviewed the document prior to the meeting, was invited to provide additional comments but did not elaborate further. The board also discussed the importance of ensuring that any monetary donations received by the county would be forwarded to the United Way for disaster relief, clarifying that this does not involve soliciting funds on behalf of the United Way.

The United Way has successfully raised approximately $2.2 million for disaster relief, distributing funds based on the needs of 14 jurisdictions, with Damascus being the most significantly impacted area. The board anticipates a second allocation of funds in the spring of the following year.

After a motion was made and seconded, the board unanimously approved the MOU and the allocation of funds. The meeting concluded with an option to view a video showcasing the rebuilding efforts in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, which will be mirrored in Washington County.

This meeting marks a crucial step in the county's ongoing efforts to support residents recovering from disasters, ensuring that necessary resources are allocated effectively.
