The City of Falls Church City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing community engagement and celebrating diversity with the approval of a new love sculpture, titled "Reflection in Diversity and Inclusivity." During the December 9, 2024, meeting, the council unanimously supported the design, which was selected from a pool of nine employee submissions, four of which met the established criteria for public art.

The sculpture, part of the city's 75th anniversary celebrations, aims to reflect the community's diversity through its design. The chosen concept will feature interactive elements, allowing viewers to see their reflections in the artwork, symbolizing inclusivity across age, gender, and race. The Arts and Humanities Council and the Planning Commission both endorsed this design, emphasizing its aspirational message and interactive nature.

In addition to approving the design, the council also discussed the sculpture's location. The recommended site is between City Hall and the Cherry Hill Farmhouse, strategically chosen to complement the recently renovated formal garden while maintaining the historic narrative of the farmhouse. This placement aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area and provide a backdrop for community events.

The council's decision comes amid discussions about budget constraints and the allocation of public funds. Some council members expressed concerns regarding the $10,000 expenditure for the sculpture, suggesting that funds might be better spent on direct community assistance programs. However, supporters of the project highlighted its potential to foster community pride and engagement.

The city staff anticipates that the sculpture will be fabricated within six to eight weeks, with hopes for an unveiling around Valentine's Day, aligning with the theme of love and community connection. This initiative not only marks a celebration of the city's anniversary but also reinforces the commitment to inclusivity and artistic expression within the Falls Church community.
