Danville Public Schools seeks parking waiver for Forest Hills Elementary redevelopment

The Danville Planning Commission meeting on November 12, 2024, focused on a significant proposal regarding a special use permit for Forest Hills Elementary School. The application, identified as PZ240052, seeks a waiver of minimum yard requirements for parking at 155 Mountain View Avenue, a move aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the area.

During the meeting, staff reported that the proposed redevelopment includes off-street parking designed to accommodate parents, buses, and staff. The plan features a drop-off loop for parents and designated parking areas for visitors and staff, which is expected to ease the heavy traffic experienced during school hours. Currently, the school is undergoing renovations to expand its capacity from 210 to 500 students, necessitating additional parking solutions.

Walter Lucas, the director of capital improvement for Danville Public Schools, emphasized the urgent need for improved traffic management around the school, particularly during peak drop-off and pick-up times. He noted that the redesign aims to utilize the limited space effectively while addressing safety concerns related to traffic flow.

The commission received 36 notices regarding the application, with four responses—three in support and one opposed. After a public hearing, the commission unanimously voted to recommend approval of the special use permit to the city council for further consideration. This decision marks a crucial step towards enhancing safety and accessibility for the school community.
