Urban Forest Advocates urge Tacoma to meet 30% tree canopy goal by 2030

In a recent meeting at Tacoma City Hall, community members gathered to voice their concerns and recommendations regarding the city’s urban forest management. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of urgency as residents expressed their commitment to enhancing Tacoma's green spaces.

Georgette Reuter, a longtime resident and member of the Tacoma Urban Forest group, was the first to speak. She passionately urged the Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability (IPS) committee to prioritize the city’s goal of achieving a 30% tree canopy by 2030. Reuter highlighted the importance of adhering to existing city-funded documents, including the 2019 Urban Forest Management Plan and subsequent progress reports. “Now is the time for action,” she declared, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to protect and expand Tacoma's vital urban forest.

Following Reuter, Judy Valerian echoed similar sentiments, stressing the wealth of data already available in the 2019 plan. She questioned the necessity of further studies, suggesting that the city should focus on the funding required to reach the ambitious canopy goal. Valerian's remarks underscored a common theme among the speakers: a call for clarity and commitment from city officials regarding the resources needed to support urban forestry initiatives.
