Academy of Excellence seeks approval to purchase St. Rita's church property

The West Allis Plan Commission has taken a significant step towards expanding educational opportunities in the community by approving a conditional use permit for the Academy of Excellence. This decision, made during the meeting on February 26, 2025, paves the way for the Academy to purchase the former St. Rita's school building, with plans to close on the property following a city council meeting scheduled for March 18.

The Academy of Excellence envisions a larger campus plan that includes not only the school building but also the potential acquisition of the rectory, church building, and gymnasium from the St. Barnabas congregation. This ambitious project aims to create a comprehensive educational environment, although the immediate focus remains on securing the school building and leasing the north parking lot and gymnasium.

The existing St. Rita's church will continue its operations, holding multiple services each week, which the Academy believes can coexist harmoniously with its educational activities. The proposed changes to the school facilities will not significantly alter the exterior appearance, but will involve necessary roof and interior renovations to meet code compliance.

The Academy plans to utilize the lower level of the school for a cafeteria and multi-purpose space, while classrooms and administrative offices will occupy the first and second floors. The upper floors remain unprogrammed for now but could be developed in the future as enrollment increases.

This development is poised to enhance educational resources in West Allis, with the Academy of Excellence aiming to create a vibrant learning community that meets the needs of local families.
