Vermont Labor Department highlights CTE programs' role in workforce revitalization

Vermont's Department of Labor is taking significant steps to address the state's workforce crisis, as highlighted in a recent meeting focused on the intersection of education and employment. Deputy Commissioner Kendall Smith and Director of Workforce Development Jay Ramsey emphasized the critical role of Career and Technical Education (CTE) in revitalizing local communities and retaining young talent.

During the meeting, Smith noted that Vermont currently faces a workforce shortage, with approximately two job openings for every job seeker. This imbalance underscores the importance of CTE programs, which serve as a vital link between education and the workforce. In the 2024 fiscal year, 1,728 students graduated from CTE programs, representing about 20-25% of the state's high school graduates. Notably, 52% of these graduates entered the workforce directly, while 44% pursued further education.

The discussion also revealed that a significant portion of CTE graduates—65%—earned post-secondary or industry credentials, and many participated in work-based learning experiences. This data highlights the effectiveness of CTE in preparing students for immediate employment and further education, which is essential for addressing the state's labor needs.

Smith and Ramsey outlined the Department of Labor's ongoing collaboration with CTE centers and adult education programs, aiming to enhance workforce development strategies. They expressed optimism about future initiatives that will further integrate education and workforce training, ultimately benefiting Vermont's economy and community stability.
