Roanoke County Schools are set to enhance educational resources and security measures following the acceptance of several unbudgeted grants during the School Board Work Session on January 8, 2024. The board approved a total of $40,460 in grants aimed at supporting teachers, STEM initiatives, and improving school safety.

Susan Peterson, the school board member who presented the grants, outlined the funding sources and their intended uses. Notably, $900 from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will provide stipends for nine teachers who will serve as trainers for the new mathematics and English standards. Additionally, two $5,000 grants will support local STEM programs, including the Green Valley Elementary Robot Drone League Challenge.

A significant $10,000 micro grant will focus on removing barriers to academic achievement by educating families, while a Claude Moore grant will fund the purchase of educational equipment, including transparent phantoms for health classes.

In terms of security, the board also discussed a $13,407 allocation from the minor capital fund for camera surveillance equipment at Glenvar High School, following a reallocation of unspent funds from a previous security grant.

The board plans to roll these grant approvals into the consent agenda for the next meeting, ensuring that the funds are appropriated promptly to benefit students and staff.

In addition to the grant discussions, Superintendent Dr. Nicely addressed the impact of recent weather conditions on the school calendar, noting the challenges posed by ice and snow. He humorously acknowledged students' inquiries about snow days, highlighting the unpredictable nature of winter weather in the region.

These decisions reflect the Roanoke County School Board's commitment to enhancing educational quality and safety, ensuring that students have access to necessary resources and a secure learning environment.
