City engineers recommend reduced driveway width to protect street tree

In a recent Glendale Design Review Board meeting, a significant discussion centered on the proposed modifications to a driveway apron, highlighting the balance between development and environmental preservation. Board members emphasized the importance of maintaining the existing driveway apron while minimizing its width to avoid an excessively large structure that could impact the surrounding area, particularly a street tree.

The applicant was advised to consult with Public Works Engineering to clarify requirements for the driveway apron and the street tree located in the public right-of-way. This collaboration aims to ensure that any changes to the driveway do not compromise the tree's health or the aesthetic of the neighborhood.

The applicant reported that they had already reached out to Public Works regarding the potential removal of the street tree and the apron’s widening. As a result, the width of the driveway leading to the new garage was reduced from 18 feet 10 inches to 18 feet. However, staff recommended further reductions to the driveway width on-site, while still ensuring adequate access to and from the parking area.
