Boston plans citywide veterans banner program to honor local heroes

During a recent meeting focused on Veterans, Military Families, and Military Affairs, Boston officials discussed plans to expand a successful veterans program citywide. The initiative, which aims to honor local veterans through a banner program, is currently in the planning stages, with a strong emphasis on community engagement and thoughtful implementation.

City representatives highlighted the importance of ensuring that the program is executed properly, rather than hastily. "If we're gonna honor our veterans, I want to make sure that we're honoring our veterans in the best possible way," one official stated. The first phase will focus on gathering input from various neighborhoods, including West Roxbury, which has already shown interest in participating. With over 20,000 veterans residing in Boston, the program aims to recognize a significant number of these individuals. The city is also contemplating the timing of the banner displays, potentially aligning them with Memorial Day in May and Veterans Month in November.

In addition to the banner program, the meeting touched on other ongoing veteran services, including a recent luncheon for Black veterans and upcoming events like a women's round table and a welcome home breakfast.
