OC Junior announces expanded eSports program and new certifications for students

The Forney Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees meeting on February 3, 2025, highlighted several exciting developments aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for students in the community. Among the key announcements was the expansion of programs at the O.C. Junior facility, which will soon host a variety of sports activities, including basketball and volleyball, keeping the venue busy every night for the next month and a half.

In addition to sports, the O.C. Junior has already seen significant community engagement, with 56 birthday party reservations made since its opening. This reflects a growing interest in the facility and its offerings.

The meeting also showcased the district's commitment to career and technical education. For the upcoming school year, Forney ISD will introduce new courses in fields such as fashion design, cosmetology, automotive technology, emergency medical services, exercise wellness, and construction management. Notably, this year marks the first cohort of students graduating with certifications in cosmetology and automotive technology, a significant milestone for the district.

Furthermore, the district is expanding its partnership with the Texas Workforce Commission to provide externship opportunities for both teachers and students. This summer, five teachers and ten students will participate in externships, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in their respective fields.

New certifications are also being introduced, including a basic security officer program and a community health worker certification, which will further prepare students for careers in law enforcement and healthcare.

Looking ahead, the district has planned various events, including career fairs and a fashion show featuring students from the fashion design class. These initiatives aim to foster community involvement and provide students with valuable experiences that connect their education to real-world applications.
