Tech Corps launches pre apprenticeship programs for Ohio high school students

In a recent meeting of the Ohio House Technology and Innovation Committee, the CEO of Tech Corps presented a compelling case for enhancing technology education among K-12 students in the state. Since its inception in 1995, Tech Corps has focused on bridging the opportunity gap in technology education, directly impacting 25,000 students and engaging over 2,000 technology professionals as volunteers.

The CEO highlighted the growing demand for technology talent in Ohio, particularly as major companies like Intel, Meta, and Google expand their operations in the region. This demand underscores the necessity for meaningful technology experiences for students, which Tech Corps aims to provide through innovative programs. The organization has developed career-connected learning initiatives that equip students with essential technology and employability skills, preparing them for post-secondary success.

A significant focus of the discussion was on the introduction of pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship models tailored for the 21st century. Traditionally associated with trades like plumbing and construction, these models are being reimagined to address workforce needs in the technology sector. Tech Corps recently piloted two programs, Student Tech Core and Student Web Core, which received approval as registered pre-apprenticeship programs. The pilot outcomes were promising, with over 100 students earning pre-apprenticeship certificates and nearly half obtaining industry-recognized credentials.

The CEO emphasized that these programs not only help students meet graduation requirements but also foster interest in technology careers. Moving forward, Tech Corps is seeking public and private partnerships to expand these initiatives to reach 375 students, aiming to address skills gaps and create meaningful career pathways.

The meeting concluded with an invitation for collaboration, as Tech Corps expressed its readiness to partner with the committee to empower Ohio students and strengthen the state's technology ecosystem. This proactive approach highlights the importance of aligning educational programs with industry needs, ensuring that the next generation is well-prepared for the evolving job market.
