Overland Park declares March 2025 National Sleep Awareness Month with Sleepyhead Beds

During the recent Overland Park City Council meeting on March 3, 2025, Mayor Kirk Skoob proclaimed March as National Sleep Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of sleep health and the city's partnership with Sleepyhead Beds. This initiative aims to address the critical issue of mattress accessibility for families in need within the Kansas City region.

The proclamation highlighted Sleepyhead Beds' sustainable model, which involves collecting, sanitizing, and redistributing mattresses to families who lack proper sleeping arrangements. Last year, this effort diverted approximately 225 tons of waste from landfills, showcasing the dual benefit of environmental sustainability and community support. Mayor Skoob encouraged residents to donate gently used mattresses, reinforcing the idea that a good night's sleep is essential for children's health, education, and emotional well-being.

Aaron Gutzlaff, president of the board for Sleepyhead Beds, spoke about the organization's mission to provide comfortable sleeping arrangements for children in the area. He noted the significant number of kids in the Kansas City region who do not have their own beds, and he expressed gratitude for the city's support in raising awareness about this pressing issue.

In addition to the sleep awareness initiative, the meeting also touched on the recent recognition of Overland Park as one of the best U.S. cities for small businesses. Mayor Skoob encouraged residents to explore Downtown Overland Park, which is home to numerous entrepreneurial ventures.

Furthermore, the council discussed an art exhibit titled "The Road Home: The Journey from Homelessness to Home," currently displayed at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center. This exhibit features powerful photographs and stories, aiming to foster community engagement and support for the local art scene.

The meeting underscored the city's commitment to addressing social issues while promoting local businesses and cultural initiatives. As Overland Park moves forward, the focus on community health and support for vulnerable populations remains a priority, with ongoing efforts to engage residents in meaningful ways.
