The Michigan Capitol Commission is set to embark on a significant renovation project that will enhance the Capitol's infrastructure and safety. During a recent meeting, officials outlined a comprehensive five-phase plan to replace the glass flooring in the Capitol, with the first phase already underway. This initial phase involves the removal of existing glass and grout, followed by painting the underlying metal structure. The new glass, manufactured by Lucid Glass, is expected to arrive in April, with installation scheduled to begin shortly thereafter.
To minimize disruption during this renovation, particularly due to noise, the commission has decided to conduct the loudest work at night, starting after 5 PM. This decision comes in response to concerns raised by staff and tour groups who reported difficulties hearing during the day due to the noise from construction activities.

A landscape master plan, revised in February 2023, will guide the removal of these trees, which have posed risks to the public. A detailed plan for tree removal and replanting will be presented to the commission for approval in upcoming meetings.
Furthermore, the commission is preparing to accept bids for a decorative painting project on the Fourth Floor ceiling. This initiative aims to ensure high-quality craftsmanship and competitive pricing by inviting multiple reputable painting companies to submit proposals.
These projects reflect the commission's commitment to maintaining the Capitol's historical integrity while ensuring the safety and comfort of its visitors and staff. As these renovations progress, further updates will be provided to keep the community informed about the developments and their implications for the Capitol's operations.
