Lakeland City Council approves installation of speed humps on Shenandoah Street

Polk County officials have approved the installation of three speed humps on Shenandoah Street in Lakeland, addressing long-standing safety concerns raised by local residents. During a public hearing on March 4, 2025, traffic manager Amy Gregory presented data showing that the street, classified as a local residential road, had an average speed of 33 miles per hour, exceeding the posted limit of 25 miles per hour.

Residents voiced their support for the traffic calming measures, citing safety issues for children walking to nearby George Jenkins High School and the increasing volume of traffic using Shenandoah as a thoroughfare. Carol Brown, a resident for nine years, emphasized the urgent need for the speed humps, stating, "The traffic is ridiculous and scary." Another resident, Sonia Fernandez, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the lack of sidewalks and the dangers posed to children in the neighborhood.

The board's decision followed a successful ballot among homeowners, with over 80% in favor of the installation. The approval marks a significant step towards enhancing safety in the community, as the speed humps are expected to reduce vehicle speeds and improve conditions for pedestrians.
