Federal Way officials discuss plans for a dedicated senior center

Federal Way's community center is seeing a surge in senior engagement, with over 500 seniors visiting daily for a variety of activities, including popular programs like pickleball and fitness classes. The center operates seven days a week, primarily catering to seniors during weekdays, and serves more than 200 lunches each day. Recently, a new lunch program was introduced to meet growing demand.

During a recent council retreat, discussions highlighted the need for a dedicated senior space, as many seniors feel overwhelmed by the presence of children and families in the community center. Council members, including Susan and Paul, expressed concerns about the current setup and suggested creating a designated entrance and specific hours for seniors to enjoy activities without distractions. This proposal aims to enhance the experience for seniors, making the space feel more welcoming and tailored to their needs.

The council also explored the potential for a standalone senior center, although the costs associated with new construction were noted as a significant barrier. Estimates for building a new facility range from $3.50 to $9.50 per square foot, depending on the amenities included. Renovation of existing spaces was discussed as a more feasible option, with the possibility of repurposing community rooms for senior activities during specific hours.

In addition to addressing space concerns, the council acknowledged the importance of promoting existing programs more effectively. Suggestions included enhancing outreach efforts to ensure seniors are aware of the diverse offerings available to them.
