In a vibrant virtual gathering on Wednesday evening, students from across Maryland came together to share their insights and reflections on the State Board of Education's strategic plan during a Student Virtual Roundtable hosted by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The meeting, which ran from 6 to 7:30 p.m. EST, marked the third roundtable in an ongoing effort to engage students in shaping educational policies that directly affect their lives.
The session kicked off with a presentation detailing the strategic plan and engagement report, which aims to guide MSDE's direction in achieving equitable outcomes for all students, particularly those historically underserved. Superintendent Mohammed Choudhury emphasized the importance of student voices in this process, stating, "It was really important for us to hear from students, not just those typically involved in leadership roles." He highlighted the diverse backgrounds of the participating students, who included youth apprentices and community leaders, underscoring the value of their varied experiences.
The strategic plan, which is being developed in three phases, seeks to establish a framework for Maryland's educational system. The first phase was launched in October 2022, focusing on revamping the department's mission and vision. The second phase, released in February 2023, defined success metrics and goals. The final phase is set to be unveiled in June 2023, with the aim of implementing the plan thereafter.
Choudhury also discussed the significant financial investment of nearly $4 billion over the next decade, known as the Blueprint for Maryland's Future, which aims to enhance the state's education system. He encouraged students to share their honest feedback during the roundtable, stating, "Speak your truth. Keep it real."
As the meeting transitioned to a discussion format, students were invited to ask questions and provide input on the strategic plan. This collaborative approach not only empowers students but also ensures that their perspectives are integral to the decision-making process.
The roundtable exemplifies a commitment to inclusivity and transparency in education, as MSDE continues to prioritize student engagement in shaping a world-class educational system. As the strategic plan evolves, the voices of Maryland's youth will play a crucial role in guiding the future of education in the state.
