During a recent Youth Employment Virtual Community Conversation hosted by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) on July 27, 2023, participants highlighted the significant impact of vocational training programs on youth employment and career readiness.

One standout discussion came from a graduate of the cosmetology program at Worcester Technical High School, who shared her journey from student to successful business owner. She emphasized how hands-on experience in a salon, combined with the guidance of her instructors, Ms. Hanz and Ms. Watson, prepared her for the workforce. The graduate noted that the program not only equipped her with essential skills but also allowed her to build a clientele while still in school. This practical experience led her to establish her own lash studio, which is thriving today.

The graduate praised the comprehensive nature of the program, which included classroom learning and real-world application, as well as educational field trips to industry events like the New York CARE Show. She expressed gratitude for the support she received from her instructors, who were dedicated to ensuring students graduated with their cosmetology licenses and were ready to enter the workforce immediately.

The conversation also featured Liliya Burks from St. Mary's County, who was recently elected as a SkillsUSA national officer representing Maryland. She discussed her experiences with industry credentials and apprenticeships, underscoring the importance of work-based training programs in preparing students for successful careers.

The meeting underscored the critical role that vocational education plays in equipping young people with the skills and experiences necessary for employment. As these programs continue to evolve, they promise to enhance the career prospects of Maryland's youth, fostering a more skilled and prepared workforce for the future.
