A spotlight on youth employment shone brightly during the recent Youth Employment Virtual Community Conversation hosted by MSDE TV, where students shared their inspiring journeys into the workforce. One standout story came from a recent graduate who is already making waves in the architecture field through a hands-on internship.
Haley, who completed a program in computer-aided drafting and design at CCTC, detailed her experience working at GKD USA in Cambridge, where she is involved in creating fabrication drawings and blueprints. "I'm in charge of all the detailing work, and sometimes I even get to design, which I really enjoy," she shared, highlighting the practical skills she gained that are crucial for her future career in architecture.
Haley credited her program for refining her interests and providing her with valuable experience. "I feel very prepared going into my field," she stated, emphasizing the importance of learning professional skills alongside technical knowledge. Her journey reflects the significant impact of vocational education on youth employment, showcasing how early exposure to industry practices can shape career paths.
The conversation also touched on the importance of course selection for students aspiring to enter specific fields. Haley noted that her two semesters at CCTC included extensive use of AutoCAD, allowing her to transition from classroom learning to real-world applications. "Being able to know how it goes from point A, the drawing, to point B, the actual building, is a very important part of being an architect," she explained, underscoring the value of practical experience in education.
As the discussion continued, it became clear that programs like CCTC play a vital role in preparing students for successful careers. With Haley set to attend college for architecture this fall, her story serves as a powerful testament to the benefits of vocational training and the pathways it creates for young people in Maryland.
