In a pivotal meeting on April 24, 2024, the Maryland State Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Carrie Wright as the new State Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2024. This decision comes after an extensive national search that began last fall, engaging a wide array of stakeholders, including parents, students, and educators, to shape the profile of the ideal candidate.
The search process, led by a dedicated committee, involved virtual town halls and surveys that attracted significant participation—211 stakeholders contributed their insights, and 353 survey responses helped define the qualities desired in a new leader. The feedback underscored a clear preference for a candidate with a proven track record in improving educational outcomes, particularly for students from low-income backgrounds and students of color.
As the application period closed on March 1, 2024, over 40 individuals expressed interest in the position, with 26 completing their applications. After thorough interviews, the board identified Dr. Wright as the standout candidate, citing her extensive experience in education leadership both in Maryland and nationally.
During the meeting, President Crawford highlighted Dr. Wright's qualifications, emphasizing her commitment to educational reform and her ability to lead the Maryland State Department of Education effectively. Following the motion for her appointment, the board conducted a roll call vote, which resulted in a unanimous approval—12 votes in favor, with one member absent.
Upon her introduction to the board, Dr. Wright expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm for the role, promising to focus on the needs of Maryland's children. Board members, including Dr. Millie McCarthy, shared their excitement about her leadership, marking a hopeful new chapter for the state's educational landscape.
As Dr. Wright prepares to take the helm, the Maryland education community looks forward to her vision and leadership over the next four years, aiming for continued progress in public education across the state.
