Council Bluffs City Council approves housing development and paramedic bonuses

During the City of Council Bluffs study session on December 16, 2024, city officials addressed several key issues impacting the community, including housing development, infrastructure projects, and public safety initiatives.

One of the most significant discussions centered around the urgent need for increased housing opportunities in Council Bluffs. City leaders highlighted that the current housing availability stands at just 1.7%, well below the 8% threshold that studies indicate is necessary to prevent rising homelessness and related social issues. To combat this, the council approved a resolution for a 280-unit multifamily housing development, which aims to diversify housing options and support community growth.

In addition to housing, the council also took steps to enhance public safety by approving a resolution that authorizes $5,000 bonuses for firefighters who complete the in-house paramedic program and obtain their National Registry Paramedic license. This initiative is crucial as emergency medical service calls account for approximately 80% of the fire department's responses, making recruitment and retention of qualified personnel a top priority.

The meeting also included resolutions related to infrastructure improvements, such as the acceptance of a bid for the reconstruction of 30th Avenue and the authorization of an agreement for the East Manawa Phase 1 infrastructure project. These projects are expected to improve transportation and accessibility within the city.

Furthermore, the council rejected all bids for the UP Museum rooftop mechanical project, indicating a need for further evaluation before proceeding. They also approved temporary use permits for a warming center and a contractor yard, demonstrating the city's commitment to addressing immediate community needs.
