City Council proposes $5M sales tax for infrastructure upgrades and road design adjustments

Fort Smith's Board of Directors made significant strides in addressing the city's infrastructure needs during their regular meeting on March 4, 2025. A key proposal discussed was the reallocation of funds from street projects to enhance water and sewer services, which is expected to be funded by a proposed sales tax increase. The board is considering a 5.08-cent sales tax dedicated to streets, bridges, and drainage, alongside a 1% tax for water and sewer improvements.

The board emphasized the importance of identifying critical projects within the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) to ensure that funds are allocated effectively if the tax passes. This proactive approach aims to prioritize essential infrastructure developments that will benefit the community.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted the ongoing design work for Mazard Road, which is currently 60-90% complete. The design includes plans for a pedestrian bridge and adjustments to accommodate safety concerns. The total cost for finalizing this design is approximately $7.70 million, with $4.05 million remaining in the contract. The board clarified that this phase is focused solely on design, not construction.

The discussions also touched on the anticipated growth in the area, driven by new developments and increased traffic volumes. With over 500 approved lots and additional dwelling units yet to be constructed, the board recognized the urgency of preparing infrastructure to support this growth. Traffic counts have shown significant increases, indicating a need for timely improvements.
