The Calistoga City Council took a significant step during its February 27, 2024 meeting by amending the mobile food vending ordinance, specifically prohibiting food trucks from parking on Wapo Avenue. Planning and Building Director Sandra Meyer presented the amendment, highlighting safety concerns due to the narrowness of Wapo Avenue and its awkward intersections with Lincoln Avenue, which pose risks for both vendors and drivers.
The ordinance, initially adopted in August 2023, was reviewed by the council in December, where it was generally deemed effective, except for the issues surrounding Wapo Avenue. The council's decision to restrict food trucks from this location aims to enhance public safety and address community concerns.
Public comments reflected mixed feelings about the food truck presence in Calistoga. Local business owner Steve Patel expressed support for food trucks but raised concerns about noise and visibility for guests at his hotel, suggesting that food trucks should be placed further away from guest rooms. Another resident, Rob Serini, proposed creating a designated area for food trucks to alleviate parking issues and enhance the dining experience.
Council members acknowledged the need for flexibility and ongoing adjustments to the ordinance as they gather more community feedback. Councilman Eisenberg emphasized the importance of finding suitable locations for the three approved food trucks, while Vice Mayor Cooper noted the necessity of supporting local businesses while ensuring a pleasant environment for residents and visitors.
The council unanimously approved the amendment to the ordinance, which prohibits food trucks on Wapo Avenue, while also indicating a willingness to revisit the food truck regulations in the future to better accommodate vendors and the community's needs.
