A comprehensive school improvement plan was unveiled at the East Aurora School District 131 Board of Education meeting, highlighting ambitious goals for Hermas Elementary. The plan aims for 65% of students to achieve a proficiency level of 3 or above on the ACCESS assessment, while also targeting a 95% attendance rate and minimal disciplinary actions.
In addition to the improvement plan, Dr. Jennifer Van Duzen discussed the upcoming EA magnet lottery for the 2025-2026 school year, and Maritza Martinez presented the Rex Winter and Spring catalog. A significant proposal from Dr. Engel involved the Light Sale platform, which will provide over 10,000 books in English and Spanish, funded through Title I at a cost of $65,200.
The board also reviewed a recommendation for a K-5 literacy pilot program, proposing the adoption of HMH and Arriba La Lectura for English and Spanish language arts. The total investment for this initiative is projected at $2,516,441.01, covering resources and professional development for teachers.
Further discussions included updating Spanish textbooks at the high school level and a partnership with Northern Illinois University to support 28 non-certified staff members in obtaining degrees in special education, with a total cost of $596,775.
All proposed action items were approved unanimously, including the literacy pilot and educational credential program, signaling a strong commitment to enhancing educational resources and staff development within the district. The next board meeting is scheduled for February 18, where further developments will be discussed.
