The Loomis Town Council meeting on August 8, 2023, focused on the long-awaited development of a monument sign at the intersection of Taylor Road and Sierra College Boulevard. This project, which began in 2016, has faced numerous delays, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic and challenges in securing contractors.
Town staff reported that a lease agreement with Union Pacific Railroad was established in 2017, allowing for the sign's construction on their property. The design has been updated to meet current standards, with the sign set to be 14 feet long and 10 feet high, adhering to the specifications outlined in the lease. Notably, the project will utilize solar lighting, as electrical wiring is not permitted under the lease terms.
The council is now considering an appropriation of $55,000 to fund the project, which includes $38,000 for construction by JS West and $12,300 for design work by Solus Graphics. The economic development committee, alongside the Chamber of Commerce, has been actively involved in finalizing the design elements of the sign, which aims to enhance community branding and attract visitors to Loomis.
Council members expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to promote local events, such as the annual Eggplant Festival, and to direct traffic to local businesses. The sign is seen as a crucial step in reinforcing Loomis's identity as a historical destination and enhancing its visibility to passersby.
As the council moves forward with the funding decision, the community eagerly anticipates the completion of this long-planned project, which is expected to bolster local economic development and community pride.
